UNDP calls for USD 35.6 million Immediate responses include the clearing of rubble and rehabilitating essential social infrastructure to facilitate urgently needed assistance in Haiti. |
Haiti Cash-for-Work Project Expands The programme is working to put 100,000 workers on the street as quickly as possible, ideally doubling that further as conditions and funds allow. |
The United Nations has launched a massive assistance effort in Haiti, with the UNDP contributing initially to early recovery and livelihood restoration - including the cash-for-work programme to jump-start the local economy. More than 11,000 earthquake-affected Haitians are currently employed in recovery initiatives in seven neighbourhoods throughout Port-au-Prince and its vicinities. The "Cash-for-Work" Programme is the core of the UNDP's early recovery. For the modest cost of $5 per person per day, we can put Haitians back to work -- working to rebuilt Haiti. The "Cash-for-Work" Programme injects money into affected communities while also initiating urgent work, such as removal of rubble, cleaning streets and improving small-scale infrastructure. By last weekend, around 6,000 Haitians had been empoyed under the Cash-for-Work Programme. Around 40% of the hired workers are women. Priority is given to those with destroyed housing and with deceased family members. The objective is to put at least 100,000 people to work as quickly as possible, with plans in place to scale i up to 220,000 benefiting approximately 1,050,000 people. Sadly, as is often the cae in humanitarian emergencies, early recovery in Haiti is under-resourced. Globally, UNDP is calling for USD 35.6 million for immediate recovery assistance, part of a wider United Nations Flash Appeal for USD 562 million. The UNDP is the United Nations' global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, exeperience and resources to help people build a better life. It is on the ground in 166 countries, working on solutions to global and national development challenges. [more] |

China was one of the first countries to send in its teams to join the UN search and rescue efforts on the ground. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce has generously contributd USD 2.6 million to the United Nations Flash Appeal on top of the USD 5.4 million it has provided in the form of medicine, food, shelter, and otherurgently needed supplies. The UNDP is now looking to the private sector in Hong Kong and China for further help. Both the Hong Kong and Chinese private sector has demonstrated its commitment in the past to helping communites affected by natural disasters, most notably during the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake. Now Hong Kong and Chinese businesses are in a position to lend their resources and experience in helping the citizens of Haiti through this critical juncture and ultimately build back better.
