About the Peace and Development Foundation

The Peace and Development Foundation is the official partner in Hong Kong of the United Nations Development Programme in China. The PDF works together with the UNDP in advocacy and awareness raising; leadership training and capacity building; and fundraising for the UNDP for projects. The PDF's focal areas are Human Development and Poverty Alleviation; and Climate Change and Environmental Conservation in Hong Kong, the Pearl River Delta, and Mainland China.

The official partnership between the PDF and the UNDP is part of the UNDP in China's efforts to strengthen the role of the private sector and the buisness community in addressing China's remaining development challenges, and to mobilise all sectors of society to achieve the Xiao Kang vision and the Millennium Development Goals, pledged by the world's governments to be achieved by 2015. In its initial years, the PDF focused on fundraising activities, and capacity building of Hong Kong youth. Over time, the PDF has expanded its activities in these areas to include wider sectors of society, as well as engaging in advocacy and awareness raising relating to the United Nations' work in China and the Millennium Development Goals.

The Peace and Development Foundation is a non-profit organisation, founded in 2005, and registered as a charity under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance of Hong Kong.

About the United Nations Development Programme

The UNDP is the United Nations' global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, exeperience and resources to help people build a better life. It is on the ground in 166 countries, working on solutions to global and national development challenges.

The UNDP in China fosters human development to empower women and men to build better lives. As the United Nations' development network, the UNDP draws on a world of experience to assist China in developing its own solutions to the country’s development challenges. Through partnerships and innovation, UNDP works to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and an equitable Xiao Kang society by:

The UNDP started its operations in China in September 1979 with the signature of the UNDP-Government of China Standard Basic Agreement Since then, UNDP has completed over 900 projects, assisting in a diverse set of fields ranging from agriculture to industry to energy to public health to poverty alleviation to economic restructuring, and many more in-between. Beginning in 1982, UNDP has developed and implemented multi-year Country Programmes and Cooperation Frameworks with specific thematic and result focuses. Since then, UNDP has completed five such Frameworks in close collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce.

Through this partnership and the successful implementation of hundreds of programs, thousands of Chinese citizens have been trained, the technical capacity of key Ministries and institutes has been strengthened, contributing to significant progress to promote and achieve human development in China. Today, more than 85% of UNDP projects in China are directly executed by Chinese institutions, involving more than a dozen government ministries as well as NGOs and the private sector. In recent years, intensified results-based management and broadened strategic partnerships with key development actors have become a priority. Now, in addition to grass-roots interventions, UNDP increasingly works towards advocacy, policy advice, dialogue and facilitation, as well as brokerage for innovative solutions.
